Emergency Response Certification Program
Delivered by the Australian Institute of Health and Safety, the Emergency Response Certification Program recognises the skills, knowledge and professional capability of emergency response personnel working in Western Australia’s mining industry. The program provides a consistent, industry-specific approach to recognising emergency response capability and supports safer workplaces by aligning certification with nationally recognised units of competency.
The program is underpinned by an Emergency Response Competency Framework, which identifies seven key capabilities required by emergency response professionals. These capabilities provide the foundation for two certification pathways:
- Certified Emergency Response Officer – For frontline emergency response personnel who demonstrate practical capability in incident response, rescue operations and hazard management.
- Certified Emergency Response Leader – For experienced professionals responsible for leading emergency response teams, coordinating incidents and managing emergency risks.
Certification considers qualifications, relevant industry experience, practical capability, mental wellbeing training and successful completion of an Emergency Services Skills Assessment. Applicants must also provide evidence of their experience through a logbook aligned with the seven emergency response capabilities.
By establishing clear and consistent capability standards, the program supports the professional development of emergency response personnel and helps mining organisations build confident, capable and resilient emergency response teams. Certification is maintained through ongoing professional development, current core qualifications and regular recertification, supporting continued readiness as industry needs and emergency response practices evolve.
