Suicide Prevention Competency Framework

The Suicide Prevention Competency Framework for the Mining Industry in Western Australia provides an evidence-informed approach to strengthening suicide prevention capability across the mining sector. The Framework establishes a practical minimum standard of suicide prevention knowledge, skills and behaviours, helping organisations recognise and respond to suicidal distress while strengthening protective factors and reducing psychosocial risk.

Recognising the unique challenges of the Western Australian mining industry, including remote and FIFO work, isolation, male-dominated workplaces and other psychosocial hazards, the Framework supports organisations to embed suicide prevention as an integral part of workplace health, safety and wellbeing. It is designed to complement existing psychosocial risk management approaches and promote consistent, compassionate and effective responses across all levels of an organisation.

To support implementation, Suicide Prevention Australia has developed five introductory e-learning modules that introduce the key principles of the Framework and provide practical guidance for workers, leaders and organisations. Together, the Framework and learning resources help build capability, strengthen workplace culture and support safer, healthier mining communities.
